Modern Day Hero : Jessica Sanchez

Jessica Sanchez

We all have our favorite celebrity, but do they all show love for one’s country? Unfortunately not. Jessica Sanchez is a great example of a modern day hero who shows nationalism. She may be born from America, but still gave pride to the Philippines. She is truly an inspiration to the whole world, especially to us, Filipinos.

First of all, what is nationalism? Nationalism is the devotion and the love for one’s country. It is also the promoting of the country's culture, habits, and interests. Examples are the food, the way of dressing, and especially the attitude .

Jessica Sanchez is a seventeen year old singer who competed in American Idol, and won as a runner up in the finals. Millions of her fans were complaining why she didn't win, but she merely stated that Philip, a fellow contestant, was the real winner. Her humility shined throughout the world. She was born to a mother, Editha Bugay and yes, she may have a Mexican-American father, but why is she 100-percent pinoy? Well, that is because she was adopted by her stepfather.

“Of course I was born in America, but I still considered myself 100-percent Filipino. I felt very much at home upon arriving in the Philippines. There is so much warmth and love.” This statement warmed the hearts of millions in the country. Most of the celebrities of the Philippines bring pride and joy because of what they can achieve. Jessica Sanchez is truly an inspiration to us all.

I myself, consider her a great model of nationalism because of her humility, her pride for being a Filipino, and her desire to learn the Filipino culture.

In conclusion, Jessica Sanchez is an ordinary person, but did an extraordinary act that showed the world she was different. There are different ways of showing nationalism, and it is not always being a hero when you sacrifice yourself for the country because showing love and pride is one of the best ways on practicing nationalism itself. Being nationalistic is quite a simple thing and yet it affects so many people. Maybe, just maybe, you could be the next Jessica Sanchez.
